# Research reports: save cited findings and build on them

> Write conclusion reports on a Biocompile project in Markdown, link the literature, hypotheses and experiments they cite, and give them a report template.

A research report in Biocompile is a conclusion report on a project: what you learned,
written in Markdown and linked to the literature, hypotheses and experiments it cites.
Reports live in the **Reports** section of a project's **Knowledge** tab, beside the
material they draw on, so the reasoning behind a finding stays with the project.

## What a report contains

| Part | What it holds |
|---|---|
| **Title** | The report's name, required. |
| **Content** | Your conclusions, findings and insights, written in Markdown. |
| **Cross-References** | Links to the **Cited Literature**, **Cited Hypotheses** and **Cited Experiments** the report draws on. |
| **Structure** | An optional report template that sets the report's sections. |

## Create a report

1. Open the project and select the **Knowledge** tab.
2. In **Reports**, choose **Add Report**.
3. Enter a **Title**, such as "Xylose uptake in strain K12-04: transporter screen".
4. Write the **Content**, or choose a template under **Structure**.
5. Under **Cross-References**, search for and link the literature, hypotheses and
   experiments the report discusses.
6. Choose **Create Conclusion Report**. Result: Biocompile shows "Report created", and the
   report appears in **Reports**.

The menu beside **Add Report** offers three other ways to add a report:

- **Add via AI Co-Scientist** asks the assistant to draft it.
- **Link existing report...** adds a report that already exists in your organization.
- **Extract from a file...** builds one from a document you upload.

## Report templates

Report templates give reports a fixed set of sections. In **Structure**, choose a
template, or choose **Browse templates** to see them all. You can change the template later
without losing content. **Templates** in the sidebar lists the built-in templates and your
organization's own, with **Create or import** to add one.

## Reports from a conversation

The assistant can also add a report to a project from a conversation, as part of a
contribution that someone accepts. The flow is under
[Contribute conversation work](https://www.biocompile.com/docs/ai-research-assistant.md#contribute-conversation-work).

## Common questions

### Can the assistant write a report for me?

Yes. Choose **Add via AI Co-Scientist** from the menu beside **Add Report**, describe the
report, and choose **Send to AI Co-Scientist**. You can also ask for a report in a
conversation and contribute it to the project.

### Can every report in a project follow the same structure?

Yes. Choose the same template under **Structure** for each report. Your organization can
create its own templates under **Templates**.
